Salon with Scholar Kelly Quinn and Architect Peter D. Cook, Hilyard Robinson and the Making of a Community: Langston Terrace Dwellings
April 7, 2010, 5:30-7:30 at The Phillips Collection
Hilyard R. Robinson (1899-1986) introduced modern architecture to generations of Washingtonians.   Through this salon, scholar Kelly Quinn will explore Robinson's formative years, examining the social milieu and physical forms of Washington, DC that shaped his youth.  Her talk will also situate Robinson within two circles of Black men who helped him to identify and define his professional purpose;  the officers whom he served with in the segregated armed services in France during WWI and the men of Alpha Phi Alpha, his fraternity brothers. Robinson's buildings represent the principles of the New Negro movement in tetonic form and require us to reconsider the meanings of modernism in Washington, DC by priveleging African American experiences of the city.

Quinn will be joined by architect Peter D. Cook, AIA, Principal at Davis Brody Bond here in Washington, DC, who is collaborating on the design of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture.  Cook is the grandson of Juliam Abele Cook Sr, an architect, who served as the Building Coordinator at Howard University and who was one of Hilyard Robinson's contemporaries.  Cook will respond to Quinn's talk and lead, we anticipate, a rich and lively Q&A.

The salon is a collaboration with Millennium Arts Salon and The Phiillips Collection.  The event will be held at the Center for Modern Art (just behind the Phillips) from 5:30-6:30 pm.  This event is FREE and open to the public.

Review of Ethiopian Art and Culture Tour, with photography by Edward O. Savoir
April 20, 2010, 6:00 PM -- 8:00 PM at the Ethiopian Embassy.
Ethiopia: an Art and Cultural Tour, featuring the photography of Edward O.Savoir.  Following MAS' historic trip to Ethiopia in January for the Religious Festival of Timkat, views of historic sites in Lalibella, Axum, Gondar, and Bahir Dar, and the art scene in Addis (expertly guided by Ethiopian Artist Wosene Kosropf),  MAS will share tour highlights, enriched by Mr. Savoir's photography.  Tour participants present will be invited to comment.  Mr. Savoir, a published professional photographer will show a superior body of work covering the famous "Historic Northern Route" of cultural Ethiopia, punctuating the magnificent Ethiopian landscape. Many from the Ethiopian cultural communities around the Greater Washington Area will also be invited to attend.  We hope the results will be a rich and lively exchange.

The embassy is located at 3506 International Drive, NW, Washington, DC 20008-3035  Tel: (202) 364-1200.  This event is FREE and open to the public.
